The brief – design and deliver two new galleries and a modern learning space within a restored 150-year-old mine storage and testing shed.
We provided – spatial design | graphic design | content development | production & installation | delivery management
The Loaded Mine Store at Torpedo Bay Navy Museum is one of the country’s most important historic military buildings. Its restoration provided new spaces to develop to expand and enhance the experiences of visitors to the museum - the new galleries, Te Taua Moana and Te Hau Kapua, and a modern learning space, Tūhura.
We were responsible for the design, development and production of all aspects of the galleries and the learning space. The spaces have their own style, but are in keeping with the personality of the museum and required creative solutions to work with the quirks of a 150-year-old concrete building.
A large lightbox and the original tramlines draw visitors into the Te Hau Kapua gallery to find out about the European history of this place, Torpedo Bay. In Te Taua Moana gallery, projections, scale models, touchscreens and infographics help visitors to discover more about the Navy’s fleet, responsibilities and people. Tūhura, is flexible and able to adapt to suit a broad range of creative learning activities.
